The Wisconsin Historical Society holds substantial documentation on military activities, wars, the domestic impact of military actions, and the service and experiences of individual soldiers.

Military-related home-front information can be found in books, pamphlets, newspapers, periodicals, and government publications housed by the Library and within many Archives collections including Manuscripts, Visual Materials, Maps and Atlases, and Government Records.

Order Wisconsin Civil War Service Records

What will you receive?

Photocopies of hand-written pages held by the Wisconsin Historical Society Archives. These records typically show the soldier's name, regiment, company, rank, and date of mustering (enrollment) into service. Many records also include a birthplace, age, residence, occupation, marital status, physical description, muster out date and service notes (e.g. wounded, died, deserted, etc.). At the end of the order process, you will be able to print out a receipt summarizing your request and the total cost.

An Online Digital Book from the Wisconsin Historical Society Library. The volumes reproduced here list all the soldiers known to have participated in Wisconsin's Civil War regiments. Known as the Roster of Wisconsin Volunteers, War of the Rebellion, 1861-1865 , these two volumes were compiled in 1886 from original archival records, and their alphabetical index was published in 1914.
