004.0: Albert Order

Added by: megan
Description: (Albrechts-Orden) Instituted on 31 December 1850 by King Frederick Augustus II of Saxony to commemorate Albert III, Duke of Saxony (known as Albert the Bold). It was awarded to anyone who had served the state well, for civil virtue, science and art. Initially it had 5 classes, but this was amended over time. On 18 March 1858, the Small Cross was renamed the Honour Cross and 2 medals in gold and silver were added. The addition of swords was authorised on 29 October 1866. In 1875 it was realised that the wrong bust - of a fellow called Albert the Perennial - had been used in the insignia and it was changed to the intended bust of Albert the Bold.
