0280.0: Hong Kong Police Medal for Merit

Added by: megan
Description: Instituted on 3 May 1862 this complex award was granted to members of the Hong Kong Police in five classes based on the length and type of service (and despite its name, not for 'merit' in particular). Each class had a different ribbon, and if awarded more than one they could all be worn at the same time. The Class 5 medal was only awarded to members of the Police Reserve. It was replaced in 1937 by the Hong Kong Police Silver Medal which got awarded four times before it in turn was superceded by the Colonial Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 1938.
