Description: This medal was instituted on 14 January 1919, originally being awarded to warrant and petty officers of the Royal Navy either for specific acts of gallantry not in the presence of the enemy or for arduous and specially meritorious service afloat or ashore in action with the enemy. It was discontinued in 1928, with service that would have qualified for it being marked by award of the British Empire Medal for Gallantry or Meritorious Service instead. On 1 December 1977 it was reinstated and awarded to warrant and petty officers of the Royal Navy and warrant officers and senior NCOs of the Royal Marines for at least 20 years service of excellent conduct.
