ModeratorOne odd method I’ve found productive is to Google on the Russian title of the medal, and see if there’s a page about it on the Russian-language Wikipedia – because quite often you will find the instituting order cited in the references at the end. If you are really lucky, it’s hyperlinked… (if not, copy the title and do a Google search on that). If the link isn’t there any more (a frequent & annoying event), copy it and put it into the Wayback Machine (http://www.archive.org/) – I have picked up copies of quite a few medal regulations that way

ModeratorHad a hunt, but all I can find is a lapel pin version of the Proteus emblem… do you want that?

ModeratorI can probably find you some images if you want…

ModeratorThank you, Mboro…. recently I have started a collection of relevant legislation for ODM of the world. My translation skills are getting an excellent workout these days

And it puzzles the local expatriot Polish when they get greeted in the supermarket!!!

ModeratorAnd the Gentleman’s Military Interest Club – http://gmic.co.uk – which welcomes ladies (!) and has loads of worldwide medal enthusiasts there… can be a bit cranky as one or two folks here have discovered, but they are mostly friendly!

ModeratorDepending on the value of your collection and the importance you attach to having it appraised correctly, you may want to consider this:

I am sure other major houses will also be able to quote you for such a service if you want to go that route.

ModeratorInteresting, Yuri. What is the medal’s status – official or not, terms of award?

ModeratorYou are always much more than welcome, Ed – it’s good to hear you again!
Good catch, too. From H. Taprell Dorling 1946 edition, on a piece of paper stuck in & headed ‘Addenda’ we have:-
"INDIA SERVICE MEDAL, 1939-45: This medal will be awarded for three years’ non-operational service with the Indian Forces between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945. It will not be awarded to anyone who qualifies for the Defence Medal but will be granted in addition to the War Medal and the Campaign Stars."
The source of this information is cited as a statement to the House of Commons by the Prime Minister on 6 June 1946.

ModeratorMinor niggle, no ‘Victory Medal’ here…
Order ought to be:
1939-45 Star (dark blue, red, light blue)
Burma Star (dark blue, red central stripe, orange edge stripes)
Defence Medal (orange with green borders bearing narrow black stripes)
War Medal 1939-45 (dark blue, red edges, white centre stripe with narrow red stripe)
India Service Medal 1939-45 (light blue, dark blue edges and narrow double dark blue central stripe)megan
ModeratorGood to have you around, Mike.
If you have information to share on current Swedish awards, you are even more welcome

ModeratorWhiz some images over to me and I’ll put them up for you, Lucasz… it still works fine from here. Only I have ventured into areas for which there are no sections in the database yet, and requests have not yet been acted upon.

ModeratorThe advantage of Greece being my favourite holiday destination…

Μετάλλιο «Αλτρουϊσμού και Αυτοθυσίας» = Medal for Altruism & Sacrifice, a life-saving award.
Μετάλλιο «Προασπιστής της Ελευθερίας και της Δημοκρατίας» = Medal for Defenders of Freedom and Democracy, awarded to Greek Cypriots who died in the invasion by Turkey in 1974 (and possibly to survivors as well, it would be silly to have a lapel ribbon for a medal that’s only awarded posthumously!).
Μετάλλιο «ΖΗΝΩΝ Ο ΚΙΤΙΕΥΣ» = Medal "Zeno KITIEFS" which is awarded to institutions for long and valuable contribution to society of Cyprus, especially in matters of human, scientific, highlighting the cultural heritage of Cyprus. Non-wearable, obviously, and perhaps outside of our interests here.
Μετάλλιο «Εξαίρετης Προσφοράς» = Medal for Outstanding Contributions, awarded to those who render services to Cyprus.

ModeratorWhat about foreign recipients?
My father’s Bronze Star just turned up in a packet, in an official box with a piece of paper stuck to the bottom with his name on it (Major H.W. Evans), it wasn’t even presented.
