And since it was acquired at an OMSA Convention . . .

    Major General Vatslav Bronislavovich Lavrinovich

Just two medals for a mountain of documents and a fascinating tale (he was killed in the defence of Leningrad).

The recommendation for his Red Banner:

"On 15 June 1919 during the fight near Uzbekovo comrade Lavrinovich commanded 9th Platoon of 209th regiment. He skillfully led his platoon on the right flank of the battalion combat order, inspired his men by personal example of courage, and managed to withstand and repel an enemy attack. After intensive artillery preparations using heavy and light artillery the enemy launched a second attack. [Lavrinovich] without regard to his life stood firm as a true warrior, put himself in the most dangerous spots, and held the position. The enemy desperately attacked for the third time in his sector and got as close as 40 paces from his position. At that point Comrade Lavrinovich shouted ‘Hurray’ and jumped out at the enemy, leading his company and the entire battalion. With a lightning and powerful bayonet charge he broke the enemy resistance and turned it into a panicky flight. During the pursuit Comrade Lavrinovich was all the time at the head of the infantry line. When the enemy made an attempt to stand near the villages of Bol’shoye Utyashevo and Zelim-Karamovo, he was on both occasions the first to throw himself before the enemy and continued to lead the pursuit of the destroyed enemy troops."

"For successful fulfillment of Command’s tasks and developing new tactical procedures for use of atomic submarine’s weapons from under the ice fields of Central Arctic he deserves to be awarded with the medal ‘For Valiant Labor’."

Senior Warrant Officer Valentin Nikolaiovich Kubasov

    Recommendation for his Red Star:

"Senior Warrant Officer V. N. Kubasov has been with the Limited Soviet Contingent in Afghanistan since 30 June 1986. During his course of duty with the 221th ___ as the satellite station technician he proved to be a politically knowledgeable, industrious, hard working, and educated warrant officer. He is an example of unexceptionable service and fulfillment of international obligation. To perform his duties he combines a high exactingness towards his subordinates and the care for their needs and requirements. Pays much attention to maintaining readiness of his combat duty post, maintaining the readiness of the weapons and equipment. Possesses technical knowledge. Able to find a quick way out under unconventional circumstances and to make reasonable and justified decisions. Thus, on _2 November 1987, when as the vehicle officer in charge he was driving to Hairaton to receive the load, the vehicle was assaulted by the insurgents but courageous and decisive Senior Warrant Officer V. N. Kurbasov, risking his life, fired back with his personal weapon and was able to pull the vehicle out of the firing. During his tour of duty in the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan he has already performed 22 sorties on the Kabul–Hairaton route."

The other documents are there, should someone need to see them.

There is, however, a document for what has been described to me as the "Veteran of Labor Badge of the Ukranian SSR". I assume this isn’t the same as his "Meritorious Builder of the Ukranian SSR"?

The key to what we know is that Meritorious Builder of the Ukranian SSR (which, sadly, has no document).

The newspaper is that of the "Cherkasskhimstroi" Trust, called Na Budovi ("For Construction") and is the issue of 27 June 1975:

"For 12 years senior executive worker I. S. Gladun, who you see at top, has been employed in Construction And Assembly Directorate No. 27 of our trust.

"In this time, Ivan Sergeevich has boldly and directly participated in the erection of all the highest industrial objectives of the greatest (chemicals??????) in Cherkassk.

"For merit in gathering construction and the greatest production, I. S. Gladun has clearly been notable, so as of the 1st of June he was rewarded with the title called "MERITORIOUS BUILDER OF THE UkSSR.

"Sincere congratulations to you, Ivan Sergeevich, upon this high labor distinction!"
