ModeratorNobody made a suggestion for what country’s awards I should look at next, so I turned my attention to the Republic of Ukraine. Their awards are fascinating if somewhat chaotic and as I’ve been entertaining myself adding them to my own website I’ve started work on the Ukraine section here.
Today I’ve added the Hero of Ukraine (Order of the Gold Star & Order of the State, the Order of Yaroslav the Wise, and the Honorary Award of the President of Ukraine (the first award established by the new state in the early 1990s). Enjoy.

ModeratorMore Ukrainian state awards today: the Order of Merit, the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, the Order of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes, and the Star of Courage – one of the precursors of the Order of Courage.

ModeratorVery busy time at work right now – university final examinations. So I’ve escaped from the piles of marking to continue with Ukrainian medals – today’s additions are the Cross of Courage, the Order for Courage, the Order of Princess Olga, and the Order of Daniel Galician.

ModeratorMore Ukraine today and to my delight a new award, the Cross of Military Merit, was instituted on 5 Nay 2022! Furious research yesterday turned up the Presidential Decree establishing it AND an image (only the obverse, alas) and so it now graces these pages.
I also added the Cross of Ivan Mazepa, the Order for Valiant Mining Work (sounds quite nice from the description but I haven’t found a single picture of the beast yet, GRRR), Medal for Military Service to Ukraine, and the Medal for Irreproachable Service.
More next time, provided I keep the Marking Monster under control.

ModeratorI kept the Marking Monster at bay long enough to add the Medal for Defence of the Country and the Medal for Saving Life to the state awards of the Republic of Ukraine.

ModeratorThe Marking Monster is not yet beaten back but I escaped long enough to add the Medal for Labour and Valour and the Badge for 50 Years of the Liberation of Ukraine!

ModeratorSorry, loadsa grading of final year projects for undergraduate computer scientists… but I found an image for the Ukrainian Order of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes last week (then forgot to write anything here) and this week I have added the saga of how Ukraine issued some Russian medals marking anniversaries of the Great Patriotic War (as they call World War 2) – next time we see what they came up with once they started producing their own jubilee medals.

ModeratorA few ‘Jubilee’ medals – for 60 years since the Nazis were enjected from Ukraine in 1944, and the 20th and 25th anniversaries of Ukraine gaining independence. I’ve also found a 30th anniversary medal but am trying to find out if it’s official or one of the vast number of unofficial awards that make researching Ukrainian orders, decorations, and medals so difficult!

ModeratorThe marking monster has finally been defeated!
I’ve added the Commemorative Medal “25 Years of the Withdrawal of Troops from Afghanistan”, Jubilee Medal “70 Years of Clearing of Ukraine from Fascist Aggressors”, Jubilee Medal “70 Years of Victory over Nazism”, and Decoration of the President of Ukraine for Participation in Anti-Terrorist Operations to the Republic of Ukraine section. Just a few more and the ‘state medals’ of Ukraine – the ones created by the President – will be done.
That leaves a mountain of ministerial medals – each has been a law unto itself, despire an attempt in 2012 by the then President to rein them in – and that’s just official medals. There are even more unofficial ones and without hunting down the decrees creating the official ones it’s often quite hard to tell whether a medal is official or not.

ModeratorOK, that’s the State Medals of Ukraine done… culminating with the Decoration of the President of Ukraine for Humanitarian Participation in Anti-Terrorist Operations, the National Legend of Ukraine (is this a medal? It’s a very pretty brooch… still, it counts as an official Ukrainian award so I included it), and the Award “For participation in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl accident” which is so new that although the winner of the competition to design it was announced in February this year, it doesn’t appear to have been made or awarded yet. I thought I’d found it but the thing I’d found turned out to be an unofficial award.
Lacking any better idea, I’ll start in on the maze that is the Ministry of Defence. They too announced some new ones at the turn of the year, which I’m not sure have gone into production yet or been awarded, but there are plenty historic ones to be going on with.

ModeratorThe Ukraine Ministry of Defence section is now getting organised – there’s quite a lot there, mostly added by Frank Dutil (thanks!) – so I’ve started in on organising and adding to them. Like all ministries, the early years were marked by a series of awards created as the need arose by a series of orders issued by successive Ministers of Defence. In 2012 the then President of Ukraine issued a degree telling all the ministries to calm down a bit which resulted in a rush to establish new awards in accord with the directive… and then other awards have been slowly added in, some replacing earlier ones, and others completely new.
So far I have added/updated entries for the Valour and Honour Award, Badge “For Military Valour”, Badge of Honour, Medal for Exemplary Service, abd Badge “For exemplary service”… but there’s plenty more to come. Watch this space!

ModeratorSorry, lovely sunny day here in Cheshire & I kept getting distracted.
So just the Medal “For Strengthening of Defence Capabilities” and a start on the Medal “For the Development of Military Cooperation”. Both have a chequered history, being established, discontinued, then reinstated… but keeping the same insignia, which does make my life a little easier 🙂

ModeratorAnother warn day, but started in early to add you Medal “Defender of Ukraine”, Medal “For Personal Achievement”, Medal “For Assistance to the Armed Forces of Ukraine”, and Medal “For Wounds”. Enjoy!
July 24, 2022 at 9:01 am #68715megan
ModeratorStill in Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence, this week we have the Veteran of Military Service Award, the Medal “Veteran of Service”, the Medal “For Peacekeeping”, the Commemorative Badge “5 Years of the Armed Forces”, and the Medal “10 years of the Armed Forces of Ukraine”. Plenty more goodies to come, though!
July 31, 2022 at 8:54 am #68721megan
ModeratorToday, the Medal Medal “15 years of the Armed Forces of Ukraine” and the Medal “For Conscientious Service” – which has two versions with three classes in each. This concluded the awards issued by the Minister of Defence… but fret not, there’s a whole series from the Chief of Staff to come, and plenty more besides!
