I recently acquired a Sampson medal with a USS Brooklyn bar from a local antique shop. It appears old, though the difference between the bar and the medal makes me wonder if they really belong together. The medal has no name on the rim. Am I correct to assume it’s probably an older replacement?

    Thanks.

I think you may have a Phase III medal that has been re-ribboned to look like a Phase I or II. I don’t like the bar but is hard to tell in the picture, although there is no pin or catch. If you send me detailed pics I’ll check it out for you. Additionally, the ribbon looks to be newer, at least newer than the medal. If not named on the rim it is likely a Phase III planchet probably sent to a vet as a replacement. My first was a Ph III medal with engagement clasps but not named. An example of a good one for comparison.
