While the condition is not the best, here’s an exceptionally rare Portuguese Commander’s Cross for 8 Actions in the Peninsular Wars (“Busaco”, “Nivelle”, “Cd. Rodrigo”, “Toulouse”, “Albuhera”, “Nive”, “Badajos” and Orthes”). These were individually made with the initials of the recipient in the reverse center (top image).

Am I to understand individual awards showed the bestowees campaigns and that the number of arms (rays) differed from one to the other?

For one or two actions, the officer received the Commander’s Medal, with the actions listed on laurel leaves. For three or more actions, he got the Commander’s Cross, with his personal actions on the star arms. The crosses commemorate from 3 to 12 actions. each one was unique.
