On May 11, 2022, the U.S. Coast Guard will commission a new Cutter, the PABLO VALENT, which is named after the late BMC Pablo Valent, who participated in the daring rescue of the eight-member of the schooner CAPE HORN during a Category 4 hurricane off the coast of Corpus Christi, TX, in September 1919. BMC Valent was awarded both a Gold Lifesaving Medal and an American Cross of Honor by the American Cross of Honor Society. The surviving Valent family members have been unable to locate the actual American Cross of Honor Medal. We would very much like to obtain a high quality photograph of an American Cross of Honor Medal, so a framed photograph of the medal can be placed aboard the Cutter bearing his name. A link to an article written by the Coast Guard Historian’s office about the daring rescue is attached.
