Ordre de l’Etoile Noire du Bénin / Order of the Black Star of Benin

The Order of the Black Star has been established on 1st December 1889 by King Toffa of Porto-Novo. King Toffa will then become King of Dahomey, nowadays Benin. By decrees of 10 and 23 May 1896, this Order became a French Colonial Order.

It had 5 classes : Knight; Officer, Commander, Commander with Plaque, Grand-Cross.

This Order was awarded at its creation for services in the protectorat, and later for a number of services done in the French Colonies, or for the colonial expansion.

It has been discontinued on 3 December 1963, with the creation of the Ordre National du Mérite (National Order of Merite).

Obverse and reverse of this order are similar.
