Is it possible to determine the recipient of a Silver Star from the number on the edge?  Thanks, Barney

    Hi Barney.

The short answer to your question is “Yes”. The long answer is; Although this can be done, the serial number on the award card and the serial number on the medal are not the same number. Despite this, the number range of the medal’s serial number and it’s corresponding award card is roughly 1000 digits. using arbitrary numbers, lets say the serial number on your Silver Star is 8000, the serial number on the corresponding award card will be 9000. There are exceptions, but it’s fairly consistent.  This is specifically for Baily Banks & Biddle contract Silver Stars. Once we start heading into numbered Silver Stars awarded during WWII, this task transitions from “increasingly difficult” to “lucky”.

    How do?:

The National Archives are continuing to digitalize all of the Award Cards. Until this process is complete, you will need to hire a researcher to pull the award card. I would contact either Geoff from Golden Arrow Research or Lori from Redbird Research. I have hired both multiple times and have no complaints.

    Kind regards,

    MM
