I am wondering if you can help to identify this medal.  This was awarded to Lieutenant Oliver E. Cobb USNRF.  My friend Hank Cobb is Oliver Cobb’s Great-Nephew and he would like to know more about what type of medal it is and possibly why it was awarded.  Here is the response I have recently received from Ms. Lea Davis at the Curator Branch of the United States Naval History and Heritage Command: ” I was pretty sure that it was a foreign medal, but only certain foreign medals can be awarded to U.S. servicemen. In looking at the words on the medal I realized that they were in a Cyrillic language which narrowed it down and knowing that Mr. Cobb served during WWII also helped. I finally found similar medals online that were awarded by Hungary and owing to the similarity of the imagery and the language on the medal leads me to believe that it was a medal awarded by the Hungarian military sometime during WWII. However, I can find no exact matches for the medal that you have. Possibly if you could have the words on the medal translated that would help to identify it. I could reach all the letters in the photo”  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Stephanie – I’m Oliver Ellsworth Cobb’s great nephew (his sister Emily Linnard Cobb’s grandson), and have been investigating his military service and marriage. I would love to be in touch with Hank Cobb if possible as I have some questions about Oliver. What is the best way to get in touch with him?
