I recently bought a group of USN medals –

CGM dated 1933, either HEAVILY guilded post engraving or made by the mint in a gold coloured metal, I suspect the former?

Also his Expert Rifleman medal is in a similar condition but seems to be a less vibrant gilt!?

    His Yangtze medal is ungilded…

As far as I know, the manufacturing specs never called for gold or gilt medals, and none were made by the mint or commercial manufacturers for government issue. The Navy & MC regs for WEAR require an "anodized" finish which is commonly 22 kt plated gold and are sold commercially.
