ParticipantHi to all,
For the first thread of this new OMSA Forum (French section), I would like to present a recent trend : the copies of French medals.
They are sometimes call "refrappes" (new mints).
We are all used to see copies of German medals and orders, Soviet awards, British ones… And copies always existed for French awards as well. But, until recently, copies only involved very are and ancient medals, such as Military Medal of the Second Empire period, War Crosses of the LVF (Légion des Volontaires Français)…
Now are appearing copies or new mints of much more easy to find medals such as the Medal of Metz, displayed below (from eBay). These are not made to deceive and are presented as gap fillers, but…
Please, post yours, here…
Cheers.

MemberGood idea Christophe, even if copies of french awards are rare you can be disapointed.
Here is a copy made to deceive of one of the rarest french merit order, the order of saharan merit (1958-1963)
The real award was made by the Paris Mint in silver with a specific maker mark on the ring (a 1 between 2 horns of abundance). The copy is cast from the Paris mint order and details are the same, but there is no maker mark and if you get it in hands you can easily bent it wich is impossible with a real one.
A real one weight 19g and a copy only 15g.
So if you buy one on Internet, ask to know if there is a maker mark, it’s the easiest way to know if it’s a good one.

ParticipantPretty shoddy workmanship if you ask me… They’re not intended as copies because they couldn’t even pass as copies.
