Is there a roll of WW II British pilots who received the Air Medal, or is there another way of confirming whether or not an individual did receive it?

What’s the name? The London Gazette has them listed and I’ve extracted that list.

Wow, that’s quick work! Name is John Connell Freeborn, Battle of Britain ace. A miniature group, purportedly his, accompanied by a photo of him wearing the group, is on sale at DNW next month, and contains the Polish Virtute Mil. and the Air Medal w/star. I’m not certain that he really was awarded them. Any help would be much appreciated. Jim

He’s not listed in the London (or Edinburgh) Gazette for an Air Medal, although that only indicates that he did not have permission to wear the US awards, not necessarily that he never received them. Perhaps his biography, "A Tiger’s Tale" sheds some light on the awards.

Thanks a million for the help. There’s no mention of Air Medal or Polish medal in biography or the later autobiography. None of the other references regarding his service mention them either. I will check re Virtute Militari with Capt. Wesolowski. I suspect Freeborn never did receive these awards, but it would be great to confirm one way or another. You have really been helpful. Thanks again. Jim
