Established on 4 February 1944 by Executive Order 9419, it is awarded to any member of the armed forces in service on or after 7 December 1941 who distinguishes himself by heroic or meritorious achievement in service against an armed enemy not involving aerial flight. It recognizes acts of heroism of a lesser degree than would merit a Silver Star. Also recognizes single acts of merit and service of a lesser degree than would merit the Legion of Merit. Per an order of September, 1947, Army personnel who were awarded the Combat Infantrymans Badge or Medical Badge between 7 December 1941 and 2 September 1945 may also receive the Bronze Star. Designed by Rudolf Freund of Bailey, Banks and Biddle. Recipients are entitled to wear a V (Valor) device on the ribbon if the medal was awarded for combat heroism.
