Is this supreme soviet membership original?

Postby danio » Sun Oct 09, 2011 6:23 am

Hello, all,

I got a badge of supreme soviet membership of USSR which is number 55.

But I just confused that,is this one right? I mean, the mint mark shows this one maybe issued at 60s~70s (I am not sure which year). But why just number 55?

Please help me with this one.

If anybody can shows any document or information to prove it, that would be wonderful and I really appreciate it!

Thank you.

Regards,
Dan

Hello! You'll definitely have a better chance of getting an expert opinion in the "Soviet" section... This section is for the Russian Federation. I'll find out if somebody can move it there.

Oh, I am sorry!! This is the first time I send membership badge on this forum so I don't know which section I should put it in. I will do it again at 'Soviet' section.

If I brought any inconvenience to you, I am sorry.

The badge looks good to me. It would date from the 1970's. Best book on the subject by Mekhonoshin in Russian "Decoration Badges of Highest Organs of Power 1917 - 1991" published 2006 but out of print except in resale market. MMD with square top of the "D" is 1970 - 1979 so likely 1970 or 1974. With the 10th Convocation in 1979 they started to add a Roman numberal for the convocation number so that year the badge would be X-55 or X-055.

Numbering follows election district and remains the same for multiple convocations. (Member number for Supreme soviet does not increase each year but the same district representative gets a new badge with the old number for each new soviet to which he or she is selected). So it is possible to have multiple bagdes No 55. In addition during the 70's badges were issued in pin back and screw back so there is almost certainly another badge 55 out there for the same Supreme Soviet meeting.

Attached are two pictures of deputy doc and badge for 8th and 9th Convocation both numbered 508 as an example that numbers remain the same/stay with the district. In this case it is the same deputy.
