Is it common to see a Bronze star attributed in 1962 for action during WWII ?

Not common, but often seen. Since the documents were sent out after the war (mostly in 1947-1948), many recipients were missed and had to ask for them. Many veterans never knew the documents existed until many years later.

Thanks Jeff,

Does it means that during the war, soldiers received the medals but not the documents ?

Correct. Because of the number of awards made, it was decided to wait until after the war to issue the certificates. Citations were given at the time of the award. Usually these were just a typed document with the full citation, but some divisions gave the own certificates with the division patch at the top.

What about foreign recipients?

My father's Bronze Star just turned up in a packet, in an official box with a piece of paper stuck to the bottom with his name on it (Major H.W. Evans), it wasn't even presented.

It seems to be hit-or-miss with foreign recipients, although mostly "miss". I have 7 British groups with US Bronze Stars and only one has the certificate. In that case, the service recognized was from August 1943 to March 1945 and the certificate was dated 27 April 1949. I don't know if the absence of the certificates indicates that they were never sent, or if the recipients filed them away and, because of their size, they simply stayed separated from the group. Because many of the Bronze Stars originated in units that disappeared at the end of the war, many of the follow-up actions necessary to get the certificates produced simply never happened.

Of 7 Legion of Merit groups to British officers in my collection, 4 have the original certificates. Since those awards camr from the War Department or Navy Department, there is probably a greater likelihood of the certificates accompanying the medal.

The Bronze Star Medal was awarded 395,000 times prior to 1947 by the Army. The total recipients for all services for World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc, probably approaches 1,000,000 awards. Unfortunately, no single list of recipients exists.

I believe the recipient of a CIB during WWII could convert his award to a Bronze Star on request. This could also account for some later awards of the medal.
