Harold E. Gillingham, Notes on the Decorations and Medals of the French Colonies and Protectorates, Numismatic Notes and Monographs No. 36 (New York: The American Numismatic Society, 1928; no ISBN)

This is a very good book if you want detailed and reliable information, though the images are not beautiful. Though old, it is still quite valuable (though it may be hard to find).

Byrne, Daniel M. Identification of French Orders And Medals 1996 Published by the author spiral bound. 100 Pages, color ribbon chart, black & white illustrations.

A very handy guide to French awards includes Orders, Military Medals and Civilian Medals. Illustrates the award and gives a brief description of it's history and criteria for award.
My only complaint is the photocopied nature of the illustrations but in fairness the book was designed to Identify the orders & medals only.
Normally available for a reasonable price on e-bay.

French Campaign Medals of the Great War 1914-1918
By Chris Rippingdale in 2005
Published by Orders and Medals Research Society
Published in Great Britain by Print Solutions Partnership
ISBN 0-9539207-2-0

A very informative book. It nor only covers the medal's description and award criteria the history of the campaigns is also told. There are many color plates. I find it to be an EXCELLENT book.
