A rare Star

The grand cross star of the Württemberg Military Merit Order is one of the rarest among the bravery decorations of the former German states. Initially crafted by court jeweler F. Steinam in Stuttgard the Grand Cross of this esteemed order was only awarded 71 times over its lifespan in this particular design. Only 37 times during the existence of the Steinam firm. Considering that most decorations were given to royalty and few to high ranking generals it is not surprising that the few still existing pieces are all in the possession of museums.

Here is a mint example of the Grand Cross star that surfaced in a US based collection.

The view from the side gives a good impression on the construction of the star with those many layers and pieces.

    ein wunderschönes und seltenes Stück aus Württemberg. Habe ich, bis auf die VS im Klein/Raff, noch nie gesehen. Die Fertigungsweise, die man auf der RS sehr schön erkennen kann, beeindruckt.

    • Hallo Walter, in der Tat, ein unglaubliches Stueck. Die Steinam Rueckenplatte gleicht zeitgleich hergestellten Wuerttembergischen Orden. Steinam ist aber nicht der einzige Hersteller dieses Sterns.
